Measure It Both Ways
Measure a derivative by nudging, pick a sensible step, and use it to check the rules.
You can work a derivative out with the rules, or measure it by nudging. The rules are exact but easy to get wrong. The measurement is rough but hard to get wrong. How rough depends on the size of the nudge.
